Cracow Region: Following John Paul II’s footsteps
Schedule
Day 1Cracow
Arrival in Cracow. Transfer to hotel. In the evening, a stroll around the beautifully illuminated Main Square and dinner at one of the many restaurants. Return to hotel. Overnight stay.
Day 2 Cracow: Old Town, Błonia Common
Breakfast. Sightseeing in Cracow’s Old Town, which features many places directly linked to the life of the Polish Pope. The tour starts on Wawel Hill with a visit to the Cathedral, where Karol Wojtyła celebrated Holy Mass many times. This is followed by a stroll to the seminary, and then to the Bishop’s Palace with the famous window from which John Paul II greeted the faithful. The route continues to Collegium Novum - the main building of the Jagiellonian University, where Karol Wojtyła was a lecturer in theology. Then, on to the Main Square, and St. Mary’s Church. Next, to St. Florian’s Church, followed by a drive to Błonia Common, where, during his pilgrimages to his homeland, the Holy Father celebrated Mass, attracting enormous crowds. The “papal stone” can also be found here. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3 Cracow - Wadowice - Kalwaria Zebrzydowska - Cracow
Breakfast. Departure for Wadowice, the birthplace of Karol Wojtyła. A visit to the church with the font where little Karol was baptized and a tour of the Holy Father’s family home. Before leaving Wadowice, there will be a chance to try the famous “papal cream cakes”. Journey to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, famous for its Bernardine monastery complex. The Pope came here on pilgrimages many times in his youth, enjoying the calm and soothing atmosphere, so conducive to contemplation. A visit to the basilica and a stroll along the paths in the surrounding hills. Departure for Cracow. Arrival at hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4 Cracow - Zakopane - Cracow
Breakfast. Journey to the Podhale region, a hiking area much loved by Karol Wojtyła. On the way there will be a visit to Ludźmierz, a village with a neo-Gothic church housing the miraculous figure of the Virgin Mary with Child. A ceremony to crown the figure with papal crowns was attended by Karol Wojtyła when he was Bishop of Cracow. Continuation of the journey to Zakopane. A tour of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima on Krzeptówki, built as a votive offering in thanks for John Paul II’s life being spared when an attempt was made to assassinate him. To round off the day, a stroll along Krupówki where the Church of the Holy Family is located, which the Pope visited during one of his pilgrimages to Poland. Return to Cracow. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 5 Cracow: Nowa Huta, Łagiewniki
Breakfast. Drive to Nowa Huta and the Church of Our Lady Queen of Poland (the Lord’s Ark) - the first church to be built in this part of the city. Nowa Huta was originally planned as a communist showpiece - without a church. As a Cardinal, Karol Wojtyła laid the church's cornerstone, a stone from St. Peter’s Basilica blessed by Pope Paul VI. The trip continues to Mistrzejowice, to the Church of St. Maksymilian Maria Kolbe, which was consecrated by John Paul II. Then, on to the Rakowicki Cemetery where the parents and brother of John Paul II are buried. Next, on through Dębniki, where Karol Wojtyła lived with his father, to Zakrzówek, where young Karol worked in the quarry during the war. Lunch en route. Finally, a drive to Łagiewniki. A tour of the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy, linked to the cult of St. Faustyna Kowalska, which the Holy Father consecrated during his last pilgrimage to his homeland. Overnight stay.

Day 6 Cracow - Częstochowa - Cracow
Breakfast. Departure for Częstochowa - “the spiritual capital of Poland”. A tour of the Pauline Monastery on Jasna Góra, with its miraculous picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary with Child - the Black Madonna. Every year, millions of Polish and foreign pilgrims come here. For the Poles, Jasna Góra has a special significance due to the perception of Our Lady of Częstochowa as the Queen of Poland. John Paul II visited the Jasna Góra shrine many times during his pilgrimages to Poland. After sightseeing, departure for Cracow. Arrival at the hotel late in the afternoon. Leisure time. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 7 Cracow
Breakfast. Departure from Cracow.
